This month, the ESU was delighted to host Gillian Campbell, Communications and Public Affairs Lead from the Existing Homes Alliance, who met with Dan to discuss the advantages and challenges of implementing energy efficiency improvements for island homes. Drawing on his experience and knowledge of past and current delivery mechanisms, Dan was able to provide insights into the impacts and obstacles of this work across the islands.

These included discussions on local supply chains, community relationships, and collaborative networks, which have shown resilience and adaptability in pursuing housing and energy efficiency goals, supported by strong partnerships, operational flexibility, and a motivated community. HHP has demonstrated that their housing stock is on track to meet energy efficiency and heating targets for 2040. However, challenges persist, particularly with many poorly rated homes in the private sector that, despite benefiting from previous schemes, still need substantial upgrades to reach a band C rating. Addressing these challenges could involve improved coordination, technological integration, and referral feedback and incentives, as well as tackling more complex issues like preparing homes for contractors, managing supply chain shortages for retrofitting, and establishing storage facilities to support delivery needs.

We look forward to meeting with Gillian again in the future to reflect on and discuss the progress made since our last meeting.
