School Champions Sustainable Energy

Monday 2 December, 2024

This week, Dan and Stewart on behalf of the Point and Sandwick’s Energy Support Unit hosted engaging hands-on workshops on solar, wind, and hydro energy to Sgoil an Rubha.

Sgoil an Rubha pupils are leading the way in sustainability, earning Green Flag status from Eco Schools Scotland in December 2023 and continuing their commitment to renewable energy and sustainable living. This week, Dan and Stewart on behalf of the Point and Sandwick’s Energy Support Unit hosted engaging hands-on workshops on solar, wind, and hydro energy. Funded by the Outer Hebrides Climate Hub’s Ideas Into Action Fund, and matched by the Point and Sandwick Trust, the sessions taught pupils how energy is used and conserved at home while tackling pollution.

The £2,000 grant supported interactive learning materials and gifts for the children, including wind-up torches, reflective keyrings, and warm hats. Pupils were awarded “Sustainability Champion” certificates and medals, celebrating their efforts to build a greener future. Head Teacher Donna Macleod praised the workshops: “The children enjoyed the practical sessions and learned a great deal about energy and conservation. This partnership has significantly enhanced our focus on sustainability.

Dan reflected on the value of engaging young minds: “The children’s enthusiasm for creating a more sustainable future is inspiring. We’re excited to continue working with Sgoil an Rubha on innovative renewable energy solutions.” For the full story, visit: https://www.pointandsandwick.co.uk/news/more-eco-school-learning-in-point/
