Energy Poverty and Children’s Health

Tuesday 4 July, 2023

Iain and Stewart recently met with Dr. Olivia Swann, who is researching the impact of energy poverty on children’s health in Scotland. The discussion covered the work of the Energy Support Unit in Point and Sandwick and fuel poverty in Scotland.

Dan and Stewart met with Dr. Olivia Swann, a pediatric infectious disease specialist in Edinburgh who is both passionate and committed to addressing inequalities in child health. Dr. Swann is currently developing a significant project that examines the effects of living in energy poverty on children’s health throughout Scotland, with a specific focus on respiratory infections.

During our discussion, she was keen to learn about the efforts of the Energy Support Unit in Point and Sandwick and the broader issues related to fuel poverty in the islands. We discussed how these issues impact health, particularly child health, especially in the face of increasing costs across Scotland with the cost of living crisis.

We look forward to reading Olivia’s research when it is ready. You can find more about her publications on her profile: https://www.research.ed.ac.uk/en/persons/olivia-swann/publications/
